The trend surface

Trends

A trend is a group of games read as one number. Velocity is an acceleration, so a trend ranked highly here is one whose games are speeding up together — not one that is large. Three groupings, and they are not the same kind of thing: two belong to the platforms, one is mined out of the titles themselves.

Tags

nothing scored yet

No tag has a reading yet. A trend's Velocity is an acceleration, so it needs the same fortnight of daily history a game's does. Every tag in the itch.io catalogue still has a page of its own in the meantime, listing the games that carry it.

Tags are itch.io's own taxonomy, written by the developer who published the game. A tag trend is the acceleration of every game we scored carrying that tag.

Genres

nothing scored yet

No genre has a reading yet. A trend's Velocity is an acceleration and needs a fortnight of daily history behind it; until then there is nothing here to rank, and we would rather show that than a ranking of one day's noise.

Genres are Roblox's own second-level category, one per experience. A genre trend is the acceleration of every experience we scored in it.

Naming waves

nothing scored yet

No phrase has a reading yet. Naming waves are mined from titles on every run, but a wave needs the same fortnight of history any other trend does before it can be ranked.

Not a taxonomy anybody publishes: a phrase mined out of the titles themselves, listed once at least 5 distinct titles carry it. A naming wave is how a genre looks before either platform has a category for it.
